ETHICAL VOLUNTEERISM

At Florida Hebrew University, we are deeply committed to fostering a supportive, ethical, and inclusive environment for all members of our community, including our valued volunteers. As a growing institution dedicated to Torah-based education, we rely on the generosity and passion of volunteers to help us achieve our mission. However, we recognize the fine line between volunteerism and exploitation and are dedicated to ensuring that all volunteer roles are meaningful, respectful, and appropriately defined.

Why We Value Volunteers

Volunteers are an integral part of the FHU community. Their contributions help us expand our reach, enhance our programs, and bring our vision to life. Whether assisting with event planning, offering technical support, or helping with community outreach, volunteers play a crucial role in enriching the FHU experience for students, faculty, and the broader community.

Defining Volunteer Roles

We understand that some tasks performed by volunteers could also be paid positions in other settings. To ensure transparency and fairness, we have established clear guidelines for when and how volunteers are engaged at FHU:

Purpose-Driven Roles: Our volunteer roles are mission-driven, allowing individuals to contribute to causes they are passionate about. These roles are designed to align with the values of FHU and provide volunteers with a rewarding experience that benefits both them and the university.

Flexible Time Commitment: Volunteer roles at FHU are typically short-term, project-based, or event-specific. We do not expect volunteers to commit to regular, ongoing tasks unless they choose to do so. This ensures that volunteering remains a flexible and enjoyable experience.

Skill Development and Training: We offer training and support to help volunteers succeed in their roles. For those looking to gain new skills or experience, volunteering at FHU can be a valuable opportunity for personal and professional growth.

Respect and Recognition: We believe in recognizing the hard work and dedication of our volunteers. This includes offering letters of recommendation, certificates of appreciation, and public acknowledgment of their contributions. Our volunteers are always treated with the respect they deserve.

Paid Positions and Transitioning Roles

While we greatly value the contributions of our volunteers, we also recognize that some roles require specialized skills, ongoing commitment, and accountability. These roles are typically filled by paid staff members. As FHU grows, we are committed to evaluating our volunteer roles regularly. When a role becomes essential to our core operations, we will consider transitioning it into a paid position to ensure the sustainability and professionalism of our programs.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

FHU adheres to all legal requirements regarding labor and volunteer work. We ensure that our volunteer roles are truly voluntary, with no undue pressure or expectation of unpaid labor for tasks that should be compensated. Transparency is key to our approach, and we are always open to feedback from our volunteers and community members.

Building a Sustainable Future Together

As we continue to build and grow Florida Hebrew University, we remain dedicated to creating a fair and ethical environment for all. By balancing the need for volunteer support with our commitment to ethical practices, we aim to create a community where everyone’s contributions are valued, respected, and recognized.

We invite those who share our vision and values to join us as volunteers, knowing that their work will make a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and the broader community. Together, we can build a sustainable future for FHU, one that is grounded in integrity, respect, and a shared commitment to Torah-based education.
