Our Maaser

At Florida Hebrew University, we recognize the profound importance of maaser (tithing) as a cornerstone of our faith and practice. Maaser is not merely an obligation; it is a divine test, a challenge issued by Hashem, where He promises blessings in return for our faithfulness. As it is written in Malachi 3:10, "Bring all the tithes into the storehouse...and try Me now in this...if I will not open for you the windows of heaven and pour out for you such blessing that there will not be room enough to receive it." This is our prosperity insurance policy, a sacred covenant that assures us of Hashem's ongoing provision and protection.

We take our own obligation seriously and give 10% of all FHU donations and tuition proceeds to our Maaser parners.

Interestingly, the concept of tithing finds a parallel in the regulations governing 501(c)(3) non-profit organizations. The IRS requires all such foundations to redistribute at least 5% of their receipts annually, either to another charity or towards salaries and operational costs. As stated in the IRS guidelines, "Private foundations must make annual distributions for charitable purposes equal to roughly 5 percent of the fair market value of their net investment assets." This requirement reflects a broader recognition of the need to give back and support charitable endeavors.

Maaser Partners

We take great care in selecting our Maaser partners, ensuring that they embody the values and principles that are central to our mission. Our partners must be yashar—fair, clean, and upright in all their dealings. Additionally, they must align with the values of Florida Hebrew University, supporting Torah-based ethics and the advancement of Torah learning and culture.

Moreover, Maaser partners must have 501(c)(3) non-profit status, be located within the United States, and must distribute 10% of their maaser to another charity organization or an individual in need. This ensures that our partnerships are not only aligned with our values but also compliant with U.S. regulations and standards while fostering a spirit of giving and communal support.

Because we are still in the early stages of building our resources, we initially ask our Maaser partners to assist us in our fundraising efforts. This collaboration allows us to grow together, strengthening both our organization and our partners.

As we expand and stabilize our resources, the gift of maaser will become unconditional, reflecting our commitment to supporting those who support Torah values and communal growth.

Inaugural Campaign Partner

For our inaugural fundraising campaign, we are proud to partner with IsraelSelect.Org, an organization dedicated to providing tefillin to soldiers in Israel. This partnership reflects our commitment to supporting the spiritual needs of our community, both locally and abroad.

For future fundraising campaigns, we invite other organizations that align with our values to apply to become our Maaser Partner. Please, fill out an application to be considered.

Maaser Partner Agreement

To ensure clarity and mutual understanding, we draft a formal agreement with each of our Maaser partners. This agreement outlines the terms of our partnership, including the expectations for fundraising assistance in the early stages and the transition to unconditional maaser gifts as our resources grow.
